# What You Need:

01 - 4 slices sourdough or country white bread
02 - 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
03 - 4 slices cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese

→ Meats

04 - 4 slices thick-cut bacon

→ Vegetables

05 - 1 ripe avocado, sliced
06 - 1 medium tomato, sliced
07 - 2 leaves romaine or butter lettuce

→ Condiments & Seasoning

08 - Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

# Steps:

01 - Cook bacon slices in a skillet over medium heat until crispy, approximately 5-7 minutes. Transfer to paper towels to drain excess fat.
02 - Lightly butter one side of each bread slice with softened butter.
03 - Place two bread slices buttered side down on a clean surface. Layer each with one cheese slice, bacon, lettuce, tomato slice, and avocado slice. Season avocado and tomato with salt and pepper. Top with remaining cheese slices and bread slices with buttered side facing up.
04 - Heat a large nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat. Place assembled sandwiches in the skillet and cook until golden brown with melted cheese, approximately 3-4 minutes per side. Press gently with a spatula during cooking.
05 - Remove sandwiches from skillet and allow to cool for 1-2 minutes. Slice diagonally in half and serve immediately.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • It takes the comfort of melted cheese and makes it feel like a real meal without any extra effort.
  • Every texture you crave is here: creamy, crunchy, smoky, and buttery all at once.
  • You can throw it together on a weeknight or serve it at a casual lunch and people will think you tried harder than you did.
02 -
  • If your heat is too high, the bread will burn before the cheese melts, so keep it medium-low and be patient.
  • Pat the tomato slices dry with a paper towel before adding them or they will make the bread soggy from the inside out.
  • Do not skip the resting time after grilling, it gives the cheese a chance to firm up just enough so your sandwich holds together when you bite into it.
03 -
  • Press the sandwich gently with your spatula while it cooks to help the cheese melt faster and the layers stick together.
  • If your avocado is not quite ripe, let it sit on the counter in a paper bag with a banana for a day and it will soften right up.
  • Make extra bacon and keep it in the fridge so you can throw this together any time the craving hits without waiting for it to cook.
